More on roster for Jamaica friendly

As reported here and elsewhere this afternoon, the CSA named a 17-man squad for their friendly against Jamaica on Jan. 31. Join the conversation on the supporters’ forum, where the consensus seems to be two thumbs up for Stephen Hart’s “experimental” squad.

Other highlights…

  • So far only one keeper named to the squad – first time callup David Monsalve – but the CSA plans to call one more. Perhaps from the U-23 camp?
  • The squad is North America heavy, with 10 players from MLS squads and Tyler Hemming from the Montreal Impact.
  • Unfamiliar faces:
    • Carlos Rivas Jr. (Club Deportivo Universidad de Concepcion, Chilean first division; midfielder; age 24) First time in awhile I can recall Canada calling up someone to the senior squad who plies his club trade south of the Rio Grande. He played twice for the Canadian U20 team in 2004.
    • Stephen Ademolu (FK Ekranas, Lithuania; forward; age 27) Lord Bob calls him a “speedy winger-cum-striker”; two caps for Canada
    • Antonio Ribeiro (San Jose Earthquakes; midfielder; age 29) Rode the pine in the 2007 Gold Cup
    • Eddy Sidra (Energie Cottbus; defender; age 20) Started in the June ’09 friendly against Cyprus, and I believe he was at right-back
    • Massih Wassey (FC Shalke 04 reserves) Attacking central mid? Apparently also eligible to play for Afghanistan.
    • David Monsalve (FC Inter Turku, Finland; keeper; age 21) Listen to us interview him here.
  • The CSA obviously had a hard time convincing European clubs to release players for this friendly, thus the absences of big names like midfielders Patrice Bernier and Atiba Hutchinson, forwards Rob Friend and Simeon Jackson, keeper Kenny Stamatopoulos and defenders Paul Stalteri, David Edgar and Kevin McKenna.

  1. Yeah, I neglected to mention in my original post that it was odd they named only one keeper. I mean, if something (God forbid) happens to Monsalve, what then? They don’t even have Jonathan Beaulieu-Bourgault to fall back on!

  6. can someone tell me if this friendly allows Canada to cap-tie players?

    • It doesn’t, unfortunately. The next chance Canada will have to cap-tie players will be at next year’s Gold Cup.
