Preki to Toronto FC: A good thing, and here’s why

This morning, the incomparable Ives Galarcep reported that former Chivas USA head coach Preki is heading up north to fill the vacancy left by Chris Cummins in Toronto. It’s been rumoured for weeks, with those rumours intensifying when Mo Johnston stated unequivocally that TFC’s new bench boss would need MLS experience and Preki appeared to be on the outs with Chivas. Here’s my quickly-compiled list of five reasons why this is a good thing, which may (or, more likely, may not) be fleshed out once the announcement is made official:

His single name will help attract new fans. Perhaps the most widely recognizable name in soccer history is Pele, leading casual observers worldwide to associate single-name players with greatness. So while “we’re hiring Predrag Radosavljevic” doesn’t sound transcendent or impressive, “we’ve landed Preki” does. “Ooh, you mean like Pele?” the casual observer will ask. “Yes,” TFC may as well tell them, “like Pele.”

He will bring Toronto fans the success they crave. With Chivas USA, Preki has made the playoffs in three straight seasons, but lost in the first round each time. This is the exact level of “success, but not too much success” that Toronto sports fans have come to accept as the best they can hope for.

He has a personal connection to Mo Johnston. Because that would prevent anything from ever going wrong.

He was born in Belgrade. Perhaps he can use the link of his ethnic ancestry to get TFC an “in” with one of the city’s oldest and most storied clubs, the Serbian White Eagles.

He won 28 international caps for the USA men’s national team. And if it’s American, it’s got to be good.

  1. “Perhaps he can use the link of his ethnic ancestry to get TFC an ‘in’ with one of the city’s oldest and most storied clubs, the Serbian White Eagles.”

How the hell is that going to help TFC??? Are the White Eagles currently sending players on to much bigger and better things in pro soccer outside of the parochial confines of Southern Ontario?

    • So, wait a minute… you took this post completely at face value, and yet it’s the comment about the White Eagles that you’ve decided to challenge? Not “if it’s American, it’s got to be good” or that new fans will be drawn to the team simply because he uses a single name?

  2. Davor are you drunk? the whole post is satire.

“He won 28 international caps for the USA men’s national team. And if it’s American, it’s got to be good.”

IF IT”S NOT SCOTTISH ITS CRAP! (just ask Mo)

  3. HAHAHAHA

Davor: WOW… I guess maybe you’re a St. Catherines Wolves kind of guy…
