What happens to us if Setanta goes tits up?

Here at Some Canadian Guys we’ve never had any shame at all in letting others carry the water for us in midfield. We’re content to hang sloppily off the last defender’s shoulder and wait for a through pass so good even we can’t mistime the run to latch onto it.

As stated many times previously, we actually do shell out $15 a month for Setanta Sports Canada and all the Premier League action that provides. So our interest has definitely been piqued by a series of stories in the Telegraph reporting that it’s about to go bankrupt.

We wonder if anyone out there knows what that means for our Saturday mornings?

The latest story went online today and can be read here. The gist of it is that the Irish pay broadcaster is pleading with the Premier League for some leeway on a $100-million-plus payment related to the rights fees.

As I understand it, Setanta owns rights not only for a package of Premier League games to show domestically in the UK, but also (obviously), rights to a package of games to air internationally, including Canada and the US.

Our question is which, if any, Canadian broadcaster would pick up the rights to that package of Premier League games next season if Setanta isn’t around?

According to the CRTC, Rogers Communications controls a company that owns 80% of Setanta Sports Canada, with Setanta itself owning the remainder. Says the Telegraph article: The League has shareholder guarantees from Setanta’s major stakeholders and could expect to get close to its valuation of £130 million for the final year of the contract if the broadcaster were to fold.

Does that means Rogers would be on some sort of hook for its share of the broadcast rights in Canada and would simply air more games next season on Sportsnet (which it owns)? Anyone with more credibility than Some Canadian Guys Writing About Soccer who wishes to navigate Roger’s PR maze and find out for us would definitely get a mention. Of course, if they’re smart, they’d ignore us completely and put it on their own blog.

Over to you.

  1. I’ll e-mail Ben.

  2. Ah, but which one?

  3. I hope they do go belly up. Maybe we will get more and better games on Sportsnet or TSN. Setanta is a rip off.
