Obama Voices Support For U.S. World Cup Bid

As if he sought to further draw a line under how much I like him more than I do Stephen Harper, U.S. President Barack Obama has come out with official and genuine support for the United States’ bid to host the 2018 World Cup. That’s his contribution to the development of soccer in his country: throwing the weight of his office and immense personality behind the bid in the form of an open letter to FIFA president Sepp Blatter wherein he cited the glorious and unifying appeal of the beautiful game and recalled a childhood spent playing footie in the streets of Jakarta. What did Stephen Harper do? Publicly lavish praise upon and pose for an uncomfortable-looking photo op with the man commonly regarded as Canada’s biggest soccer traitor.

(Disgruntled sigh)

Well, at least we can take heart in the fact that, if the U.S. is awarded the World Cup, it will take them out of the qualifying pool, and maybe we can sneak in like we did in Mexico in ’86. Which means Barack Obama may have just done for Canadian soccer what the CSA and the Prime Minister seem almost comically unable to do: help it.

  1. You just wait until he poses for a photo-op with Giuseppe Rossi.
