Eriksson Out As Honduras Beats Mexico

After months on the chopping block, the ax has finally fallen for Sven-Goran Eriksson. The Mexican Football Federation confirmed that the Swedish-born coach was turfed out on his notoriously promiscuous butt following a 3-1 loss to Honduras in Wednesday’s World Cup Qualifiers.

The former England manager had looked to avoid the chop when he led Mexico to a sound 2-0 victory over Costa Rica at the Estadio Azteca. But a string of failures – including a loss 2-0 loss to the U.S. and the defeat to Honduras, which makes their efforts to qualify for South Africa a whole lot more complicated – was too much for Mexico’s bigwigs, and they showed him the door. With one win and two losses, Mexico now sits in fourth in the Hex – out of the automatic qualification spots. Finishing in fourth would mean a playoff with the South America’s fifth-place finishers.

I know what you’re thinking, dear reader(s): “Hey! He’s available. Canada doesn’t have a coach. What if…?” I wouldn’t get your hopes up. Even if we could afford the $7.5 million price tag that came with his two-year deal in Mexico (which we can’t), Eriksson seems to be missing the dreary shores of good ol’ England. His personal snake-oil salesman (a.k.a., his agent) said as much to The Guardian when asked if Eriksson was hoping for a return to the Premier League:

“I would say yes, his first choice would be a good Premier League club in England where he has a challenge, I’m quite sure.”

So the hunt continues for Canada, but at least Mexico is fucked.

  1. Eriksson is Armani. Canada can only afford TipTop. See link.

  2. I’d say it’s more like Armani v.s. thrift store at this point.

  3. It’s okay. The real Sven was in the stands by Edmonton anyway.

(About, what, four people are going to get that joke? Ah, well. I regret nothing.)

  4. Hey, this is THE place for esoteric humour in the Canadian soccer blogosphere.
